We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Germano Reis for his time and commitment during his research stay at the University of Passau.

Professor Reis conducted research as a PICAIS fellow from September to October 2023 and from March to April 2024 in the research group “Bioeconomy Economics”, which is led by Dr. Terese Venus. The topic of his research project was: “Dis-ruptive innivation and ‘hybrid’ products: an economic perspective of the disruptive po-tential of different forms of cultivated (cell-based) meats”.

The aim of his research stay was initially to analyze the disruptive potential of cultured meat and its hybrid forms in Brazil and Germany. Cultured meat is edible and is produced in special facilities and from different substrates without the need to raise and slaughter animals. During his first visit, he spoke both in the research forum of the Sustainability Hub at the University of Passau and during a public lecture about cultured meat, the reasons and motivation, but also the challenges of production. Professor Reis also took part in various conferences and meetings on this topic, e.g. he organized a round table, in which he also participated, to talk about the opportunities and challenges of cultured meat.

During his second stay, he focused on creating an electronic questionnaire, identifying potential respondents, contacting and collecting data from German stakeholders, conducting the data analysis and presenting the results, and writing a scientific article based on the findings.

He will present preliminary results with an analysis of the Brazilian sample at the European Academy of Management conference in Bath in June.

We were delighted to welcome Germano Reis as Research-in-Residence Fellow and to work with him. We hope that he had a pleasant and enriching stay and that he will come back to Passau soon!
