As part of a PICAIS Fellowship, Prof. Dr. Sandra Leaton Gray from University College London is conducting research at the chair of Prof. Dr. Jutta Mägdefrau at the University of Passau on the “Education Futures” project. This project explores the future of the Bavarian school system and the potential influence of artificial intelligence on it. In late 2024, Professors Leaton Gray and Mägdefrau organized two workshops to investigate the ideas, expectations, and concerns of teachers and students regarding the “school of the future.”
At the Didactic Laboratory (DiLab) at the University of Passau, scenarios for 2040’s classroom were tested with educators, teacher training students, and 12th graders from Leopoldinum Gymnasium. These scenarios focused on key competencies such as critical thinking and managing new technologies. The challenges of the future demand more than just technical knowledge; they also require resilience, creativity, and a deep understanding of complex interrelationships. The findings from these workshops and discussions provide valuable insights into the future of education and the integration of artificial intelligence into schools.
The topic of artificial intelligence in future education has garnered attention not only in the academic world but is now also attracting attention in the media. Recent articles in the Passauer Neue Presse beautifully highlight how educators, students, and teacher training students from Passau, together with our Fellow, are shaping visions for the school of tomorrow.
This media coverage underscores the significance and future potential of the fellowship, and we eagerly anticipate the project’s continued development.
