In the summer semester 2024

2th- 6th September 2024

In 1795, the Königsberg philosopher Immanuel Kant laid down fundamental demands for lasting peace between people and states in his essay "On Perpetual Peace". These visionary ideas of a democratic future in Europe and worldwide still raise important questions today: Where do we stand on Kant's thoughts? Can they help us with the political challenges of the present?

The exhibition presented the results of the first Passau Summer School for Applied Ethics (PASSAE), which took place from 2 to 6 September 2024 at the Chair of Applied Ethics at the University of Passau. Visitors had the opportunity to share their own thoughts on the topics of digitalisation, sustainable development and the future of Europe and the world.

PASSAE 2024 was funded by the Passau International Centre for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies (PICAIS), the Society for Analytic Philosophy and the Kant Society.
Many thanks to everyone who took part in this exciting exploration of ethical questions and Kant's ideas!
Organiser: Prof. Dr Karoline Reinhardt, Professor of Applied Ethics

Date: June 26, 2024
Lecturer: Dr. Gianluca Grimalda (South East Technological University of Waterford, Ireland)

Dr. Gianluca Grimalda presented preliminary findings from his field research in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. He examined how the integration of small tribal societies into the market economy affects social cohesion.

Through field experiments, he tested two opposing hypotheses: Does market integration foster prosocial behavior, or does it undermine altruism and reinforce inequality? The results from 30 villages with varying levels of market access provided fascinating insights into this transformation process.

The lecture offered valuable impulses for interdisciplinary research and sparked a lively discussion.

We thank Dr. Grimalda for his presentation and all participants for their interest.

The 6th German-Taiwanese Symposium on Public Law was held in Passau in September 2023.
Under the theme "Staat und Krise" ("State and Crisis"), 11 professors of public law from all over Germany and Taiwan met to discuss current challenges and possible responses in different crisis scenarios and to compare legal solutions, not only between Taiwan and Germany, but also between different sectors of public law. The symposium comprised presentations of 30 minutes by each participant and several rounds of discussion.

July 26, 2023, 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Location: Audimax HS10 (Innstraße 31)
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Daniel J. Henderson

The public research colloquium will present the progress of research on dynamic nonparametric multidimensional panel data models by Prof. Dr. Daniel J. Henderson, Fellow of the Passau International Centre for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies.

Prof. Henderson and his colleagues are developing tests and estimation methods for dynamic semiparametric panel data models with varying coefficients and fixed effects. They begin by testing for unit-root processes in lagged dependent variables, allowing these to vary across the cross-sectional dimension. Following this, they develop estimation procedures for the key parameters of the stationary processes using kernel estimation. Asymptotic results and bootstrap methods will also be discussed.

The researchers will apply these methods to the thematic focus “Migration Flows to European Countries.” Their aim is to forecast migration flows and identify the determinants of these flows, with a focus on the relative labor market conditions between countries over time.

All members of the University of Passau and the interested public are warmly invited to attend the event.

You can find a flyer for the event here.

21 July 2023, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Location: HK28 SR010 (Dr.-Hans-Kapfinger-Straße 28)
Lecturer: Dr. Diana Mistreanu (University of Szeged, Hungary)

Dr. Mistreanu's research in the interdisciplinary field of cognitive literary studies draws on both literary theory and cognitive science and covers a wide range of issues related to the complex and intricate relationship between fiction and cognition. The work is divided into two parts: the first part examines literary representations of human mental activity, focusing on contemporary French-language translingual fiction. It pays particular attention to the representations of affect, creativity, imagination, thinking and reason, and the way these cognitive processes illustrate various cultural, social and political phenomena of our world, such as migration, minority rights, upheavals and movements for social justice. On the other hand, work in literary theory and post-classical narratology explores and questions various ways in which cognitive science can enrich our understanding of the interface between literary fiction and the human mind, and aims to theorise it. In this lecture, Dr. Mistreanu will discuss some of the highlights of her research, talk about the two books she has written so far, and present some of the topics she is currently working on.

Diana Mistreanu holds a PhD in French Literature from the University of Luxembourg and the University Paris-Est Créteil. She is a Visiting Researcher and Lecturer at the University of Szeged (Hungary) and a Researcher-in-Residence Fellow at PICAIS at the University of Passau. There she is working on the representation of affects in the novels of Shumona Sinha under the supervision of Prof. Marina Ortrud M. Hertrampf. Her research interests include cognitive literary studies and contemporary French and Francophone literature. She is particularly interested in the interaction between body-mind-brain and literary fiction, contemporary autobiographical writing, translingual authors and Indigenous Canadian literatures.

All members of the University of Passau and the interested public are cordially invited to the event.

A flyer for the event can be foundhere.

27–29 July 2023

‘CHACUN EST UN MONDE EN SOI. CHACUN PORTE EN SOI UN MONDE ENTIER, UN MONDE EN DESORDRE’

The first international conference on the work of Shumona Sinha was held in French, with the author in attendance, and brought together researchers from four continents and ten countries at the University of Passau.

Organisers: PICAIS Fellow Dr Diana Mistreanu & Prof. Dr Marina Ortrud Hertrampf (Professorship for French and Italian Literature and Cultural Studies)

The conference included lectures, readings and discussions on the work of the contemporary writer, covering topics such as migration, femininity and feminism, refugees and exiles, memory, geographical and narrative spaces, teaching and translation.

By questioning the connection between migration literature and politics, as well as writing as a woman across continents, Sinha's novels open up new ways of thinking about the spaces and identities that make up our world.

An edited volume of the conference will be published in 2024.

June 28, 2023
The interdisciplinary symposium seeks to establish a critical race and intersectional perspective on the U.S. welfare state.
Organiser: Research Project "Welfare Queens" and "Losers": a Critical Race and Intersectional Perspective on the U.S. American Welfare State | Professorship for American Studies/Cultural and Media Studies

Applying a CRT approach shifts the traditional debate from how immigrants are incorporated into the host society to questions of how immigrants and their communities are racialized and thus incorporated into a racialized society that determines access and eligibility to welfare benefits.
It thus presents a novel way of looking at how racism works in the presumably race-neutral institution “welfare state” and allows scrutinizing another side of the long-lasting effects of racism.

Three lectures serve as impulses for the following interactive workshop. The workshop will conclude with an interdisciplinary panel discussion.

On May 16, 2023, the first PICAIS Coffee Talk took place.

Our PICAIS Fellows Dr. Nwet Kay Khine, Prof. Dr. Ingrid Piller and Dr. Diana Mistreanu presented their research projects to scientists of the University of Passau and answered questions afterwards.
